The Bible and Modern Science - Daer Platt

Many people assume there is irreconcilable conflict between the two; that you cannot believe the Bible if you believe science. Actually some of the most forward thinkers of today in the scientific and Biblical communities are finding that this may not be so. Much of the conflict actually occurs between unfounded assumptions about the Bible and unproven theories of science. Modern science could not exist without certain presuppositions found in the Bible. This course provides compelling evidence that you don't have to abandon your Biblical faith in order to accept scientific fact. This course will use a textbook.

Thursdays

The Parables of Jesus - Harold Key

Jesus' teaching was different from other teachers. Much of his was by telling parables, giving earthly illustrations of spiritual realities. The course will involve looking directly at the parables before reading what others have said they mean. Our textbooks will be the Bible itself. Students will be required to use four different versions in study: King James, New American Standard, New International Version and New Living Translation. Assignments will be given in advance for completion each following week.

Thursdays 6:00-7:10 PM Jan 17-May 15 at SE Houston Extension

Why Jesus Matters - Mike McAlister

In this uncertain world, people yearn for something they can depend on which will not fall apart or become out-of-date. Christians have promoted Jesus, but often with “churchy” explanations and lives that show little difference. This course will present Biblical explanations of how Jesus matters and steps to experiencing that difference.

Thursdays 7:00-8:30 PM Jan 24-Apr 24 at University of Houston Main Campus, A.D. Bruce Religion Center, Room 202

Communications 4 (Functions in Public Ministry)

This course will center on special functions and services that the minister is called on to perform. The student will study speech for special occasions such as funerals, weddings, baptismal services, introductions and ordinations; also material on remembering names, conducting oneself in public, crisis counseling, and participation in civic activities. Special assignments will be given for those who take the course for credit. Two textbooks will be used.
